Smart Compress — frequently asked questions

What formats does it recognise?

PDF, JPG/JPEG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, GIF, DOCX, DOC, XLSX, XLS, PPTX, PPT. Unknown types are zipped for a small size reduction.

How much smaller will it get?

Depends on file type. PDFs: 40–80%. JPEGs: 30–70%. PNGs: 20–50%. Office docs: 50–90% (because we convert to PDF first).

Does Office compression change the format?

Yes — a DOCX/XLSX/PPTX comes back as a compressed PDF. If you need the file to remain editable, use Compress PDF only on the output of an internal Save-As-PDF.

Is quality preserved?

Yes for most everyday viewing. Print-critical work may need a specialised tool.

Is there a size limit?

Same as other tools — 100 MB per file.

Pro tips for Smart Compress

  • Rename files with their real extension before uploading — Smart Compress relies on the extension to pick the compression strategy.
  • For photos, resize to display-size (2000 px on the long edge) before compressing to save even more.
  • For maximum control, use format-specific tools like Compress PDF instead.
